44% of Customers Would Abandon their Favourite Restaurant if a Low Hygiene Rating was Displayed
A recent report conducted by NFU Mutual on food hygiene ratings, revealed that almost half of the British public would turn their backs on their favourite eating establishment if it displayed a food hygiene rating certificate of less than four out of five.
With legislation impending that will force businesses to display their food hygiene ratings clearly for their patrons, this could have an enormous negative impact on the more than 43,000 catering and hospitality enterprises in England that are currently rated three stars or less.
The report indicates that customers in England have high standards when it comes to food hygiene, such that a rating of ‘good’ (four out of five stars) is the bare minimum expected by a large percentage of the population.
The public display of food hygiene certificates is already mandatory in Wales and Northern Ireland, with the former’s Deputy Health Minister hailing the scheme as being instrumental in the rise of hygiene standards across the country.
Similar legislation could come into force in England by 2019. At the moment, over 82% of food outlets in England have received 4 or 5 star ratings, which illustrates the dedication of the industry to maintaining high standards across the board, but there is still much room for improvement.
